My maternal grandma use to cook her hammered-flat, cream cracker crumbs-coated and fried pork with potatoes, cloves, star anise and cinnamon. It looked and tasted completely different from the one with tomato sauce most people are familiar with. Not quite sure how her recipe came about but I did enjoy it very much.

Memorylook is an ideal cafe to work from with indoor and outdoor seating, but gets incredibly busy, so plan accordingly. #Noshtalgia is my mash-up of the words “nosh” which means “food” and “nostalgia”. I created it to refer to food I grew up eating. Like pork chop, a dish which I think many families have their own version of.

You can choose to have it with bee hoon, hor fun or yellow noodles. The hor fun, however, is not the usual thick flat rice noodles in our zi char stalls. It’s the thinner version that is commonly used in Ipoh hor fun. It may have been a more flavourful meal with the black pepper sauce instead as the mushroom sauce didn’t really have that strong mushroom taste. The chicken, on the other hand, was really tender and easy to cut through but it may be lacking in terms of the char-grilled aroma. There aren’t a lot of places that sell this dish anymore as it’s a tedious one to prepare and the demand for it is low.

The husband and wife team have announced a second location in the same space as the Kaiser Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw Medical Offices (3782 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard), opening in late October. The Crenshaw/Baldwin Hills arm will have a massive outdoor seating area for those seeking medical service, but will undoubtedly attract locals from the adjacent residential neighborhood. Starting October 24, operating hours will be from 7 a.m. Culver City's modernist Cognoscenti Coffee started in 2009 and is staffed by friendly baristas who know everything about coffee. Cognoscenti doesn’t use fancy drink names and focuses on producing quality drip coffee, cappuccino, lattes, and cold brew in the Fashion District, Downtown LA, and Culver City. Sitting right at the intersection of Arthur Ave and Crescent, Prince Coffee House serves as a sort of town square for the neighborhood.

Below is a quick round-up of cafes that have either recently opened, or are very close to pouring strong cups of coffee throughout Southern California.

This spacious and stylish coffee destination is busy no matter the time of day—no surprise, seeing as it’s one of Highland Park’s top shops to grab a cup and a croissant, now with a second location in Downtown L.A.'s Fashion District. The original location's tall ceilings, tiled floors and diverse seating options spread between tables, couches and a patio out back make for a fashionable setting, while the toasts, breakfast burritos, and Sugarbloom Bakery pastries make for a solid meal. The espresso blend rotates frequently, but teas and specialty coffee drinks remain more or less the same. We love the Figueroa, made with sweetened condensed milk, espresso, milk and cinnamon, topped with a Maria Cookie. No matter which location you visit, the beans at Boy & the Bear get roasted three times a week, which makes a major difference in the quality of each cup.

BEAUTIFUL FOOD

There was a time in Singapore when Oxtail Stew was the in-thing and it has gone out of fashion since. For those who are hearing about this dish for the first time, it might be intriguing. As it’s my first time trying this part of the cow, I was apprehensive, but I came to enjoy every mouthful.

Eleven temporary listings – known as "icons" – are being offered by Airbnb, which wants to portray itself as a company that sells experiences and not just alternatives to staying in a hotel. Over the last few months, a big new crop of caffeine-focused cafes have opened throughout Southern California. It certainly qualifies as a boom in coffee-loving Los Angeles, where locally owned cafes are often chosen over corporate chains, thanks to their creative menus that celebrate the beloved espresso bean. The Oaxacan mocha is the most popular drink at BLVD MRKT’s Cafe Santo.

Light streams into the big, beautiful space through tall windows that are perfect for people watching, and they have a hundred tin Turkish coffee cups hanging from the ceiling inside. There’s also a designated “quiet area” in the basement with a long wooden table for working. Uncle Jimmy holds fast to his passion for serving customers delicious Hainanese Western food with a wide smile, since 1977. At over 80 years old, he’s still strong as an ox, busying himself with the operations of the eatery with a strong sense of purpose. Prince Coffee House has a long and rich history of over 40 years. It was known as a popular hangout spot for Hong Kong opera singers in the 70s when it was located at Shaw Towers where the now-defunct Prince Cinema was.

A chain of coffee shops began a decade before from Devolli Corporation and changed the way of thinking for coffee in Kosova. Patria Coffee Roasters opened in Compton in 2018. It is a cafe but also a community space that hosts special events. Staff serve incredible coffee beans sourced from around the globe and roast them at a site near the cafe. Those who grew up in LA will highly appreciate the LAUSD-esque coffee cake. The coffee at Koreatown’s Memorylook is as excellent as its matcha lattes, giant matcha brulee, and tiramisu doughnuts.

He recalls, “There was an incident where a new recruit asked me, ‘As I am your old customer, can I still enjoy the student offer? ’ Yes, of course I gave him the privilege as I feel that he is still dependent on his parents. So I told him, ‘Never mind, if you like to eat pork chop, lamb chop, you can order’.” Mr Lim’s warm affability allowed him to form lasting relationships with the people around him, be it customers, employees, or neighbouring business owners.

And Eagle Rock locations have plenty of tables and a few charging outlets apiece, while the Inglewood shop’s lofted couch seating is more conducive to casual morning or afternoon hangs. In a big way—especially in its new-ish Arts District location, a 7,000-square-foot, two-story café and coffee roastery that's now the L.A. The all-day menu here features a flexible kind of global cuisine, not to mention a handful of truly good coffee-based mocktails exclusive to that space. Locations are available for takeout and online pre-order. Well for Mad Lab, one of Downtown's top roasters, the name says it all.

But step inside and you will soon find yourself captivated by the vintage-style posters decorating the walls. The menu promises a taste of the nostalgic past, featuring old-school dishes such as Oxtail Stew, Salmon Steak and Pork Chop. What is more fascinating is how the posters pair pictures of the dishes with photos of celebrities. The faces of a young Lin Feng Jiao (林凤娇) and Qin Han (秦汉) beam warmly at you as you muse over your food options. These famous Taiwanese actors, along with many other directors and celebrities, have dined at Prince Coffee House.

The chicken chop comes with roasted potatoes and garden vegetables. The portion was, again, very generous with many slices of beef found all over the plate. It didn’t have a strong wok hei but it is very well seasoned. I wished that they gave us more sauce to go around as the hor fun got quite dry as we were halfway through it. Moving on to a dish that leans more towards the Chinese part of this unique cuisine, the beef hor fun.
